Aren't You Forgetting Something?
“How do I survive 2 hours?”, this was the question that kept running through my head while I was walking towards my seat. As I reached to my seat row, I wasn’t sure which one was my seat and seeing the confused look on my face, a flight attendant approached me and my jaw dropped. I had never seen anyone so beautiful in my life and I stared at her in awe. “Sir, may I know your seat number?” she asked, to which I replied, “No.”
Confused upon hearing what she heard, she said, “I’m sorry, I don’t understand.” I was in a state of total admiration that I had no idea what I was saying. Realizing what had just happened, I quickly composed myself and said, “I’m sorry I mean 7A, I’m confused as to which seat is A.”
“No worries, the aisle seat is yours”, she said and I thanked her to which she smiled back, a smile that can light up a room and brighten the lives of all who see it.
That’s when it hit me that I should ask her out, but there was a problem. Unlike my friends, I was no ladies’ man. I didn’t have the faintest idea on how to ask out a girl. I would get all awkward and weird doing that, something my friends always make fun of. But I couldn’t sit back out and do nothing. I had to give it a shot regardless of how it goes. I knew I was going to embarrass myself during the process but deep down I knew in my heart that she was worth it.
After an hour, the crew started with the food service, I realized that this was the perfect opportunity to talk to her. I was anxiously waiting for her and at the same time pretty nervous about talking to her, hoping I don’t screw it up. A few moments later, she came to my seat and said, “Sir, would you like to have anything?” I wish I could say I’d like to have her number, but that would be pretty stupid.
So, I looked at her name badge and said, “A cup of coffee would be great, Emma.” She was surprised with me calling her by her name, but smiled back and handed me the cup. “Thank you and by the way, you look pretty fly!”, I complimented her.
“Um thank you!” she giggled. “So, do you live in Sydney?”, she asked. I thought it was going well and continued, “Yeah I live there and I’m sorry if that opening pun was a little plane.” I was hoping she would understand the joke. She smiled back saying, "No problem", but i knew she was cringing and i had to say something to make it better.“You know I’m just winging it.” I said with a sheepish smile.
The second those words came out of my mouth I knew it was a mistake. That was so bad. Saying nothing would have been better than saying something so stupid. I looked at her for her reaction but before she could say anything she was called by some other passenger and had to leave. “Could I be more stupid?”, I asked myself with a sigh, resting my hands on my forehead. I thought it was for the best.
That’s when I felt a tap on my shoulder. I turned over to see an old lady, around in her 60’s with a lovely smile sitting beside me. “I couldn’t help but notice your pain. Is everything all right?”
“Yeah, it’s fine.” But she knew it wasn’t. “It’s about that lovely lady, isn’t it?” I nod my head with disappointment. “Guess those jokes just flew over her head, huh?”, she joked. It was funny and we both shared a laugh. “Can I suggest you something?”, she asked. I thought getting some advice could be helpful and asked her to continue.
“Please don’t use such clichéd lines. I was losing my mind listening to them. That girl was kind enough to smile back.”, she chuckles. I couldn’t be more embarrassed and just smiled back sheepishly. “Do you really like this girl?” she asked. “A lot, I like her a lot!” I exclaimed. “Then just tell her how you feel, be honest. Trust me, it’s the best way to express yourself and much better than those cringy awful jokes you used. And if she doesn’t reciprocate the same, don’t worry. There are many people out there and I’m pretty sure you’ll find the right person, son.”
They say old people are wise and it’s true. I knew she was right so I got up from my seat and looked for Emma. She was standing near the pantry, having a sip of coffee and I knew this was the best chance. So, I headed towards Emma, who saw me coming and placed her coffee in the cabinet asking, “Can I help you sir?”
“Yes. Actually, I just need you to hear me out.” She looked bewildered as I continued to explain. “I just want to say, you’re very pretty and I’m sorry for our earlier interaction. I know it was dumb and stupid and I’m so sorry about that. The thing is, I’m just not good with flirting or charming people with some jokes, it’s just too hard for me.” “Yeah, I could see that.”, she chuckled.
“Um yeah”, I said with an embarrassed smile. “I guess what I really want to say is that, you’re the finest, loveliest and most beautiful person I have ever seen and even that’s an understatement. I really mean it. You have a smile so infectious that it captures the heart of anyone lucky enough to see it. And you were kind enough to smile back at my awful jokes.” I said, gazing into her eyes.
“Um thank you, I don't know to say”, she said, surprised and elated hearing something so nice. “That was very sweet. I think that’s the sweetest thing someone has ever said to me”, she said as she looked at me with a huge smile. That smile, that could easily melt anyone’s heart. However, our moment was short lived as we were interrupted with the captain’s announcement, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is the captain speaking. We’ll be landing in another 10 minutes and request everyone to return to their seats.”
“I’m so sorry but I have to get ready for the landing”, she said with a slight disappointment. “Oh yeah, sure” I said with a smile and went back to my seat and buckled up. I was a little upset that I couldn’t spend more time with her, but at least I was able to convey my feelings.
After a few minutes, we landed at Sydney and prepared for disembarking. I thought I should see her one last time. She was standing near the exit bidding goodbye to the passengers. I knew I was definitely going to miss her. As I reached to the front of the plane, I gazed at her for a moment and thanked her for such a pleasant flight. “It was my pleasure”, she said with a graceful grin. I smiled back and turned around and headed towards the exit, but I stopped when I heard, “Aren’t you forgetting something?”
I turned back to see Emma extending her hand holding a piece of paper. “I’m sorry, I don’t understand.” I said, confused and curious. She handed me the paper and told me to open it. As I read it, my face had a wide grin and I was over the moon and that was the happiest moment of my life.
